Bramwel Deefer Otieno

  Bramwel is living with the grandmother after the father died in 2007. He has one brother and two sisters. The mother helps with teaching nursery school children here she earns $20 a month and is unable to keep the family without help let alone taking them to school.  The mother is also HIV+ which is what killed the father and also the younger sister is also infected.  She is therefore going through many challenges with lots of illness.

They have a mud wall and tinned roof at home where he sleeps on a matt on the floor.

At home, they eat kales and ugali which is made from cornmeal mainly and occasionally small fish called omena as protein.  They also take strong tea or black tea for breakfast.

He helps with cooking and fetching water after school and also graze the cows.

It is also near the lake and they draw water from the lake which these days is very dirty and therefore people suffer from lots of stomach problems.

Sharon Akinyi Okumu

  Sharon lives with her auntie who is taking care of them after both their parents died.  The auntie who has no child of her own later lost her husband who was the provider of the home.  Stranded with the children, she sought and so korando supports Sharon with education.  She sells vegetables to ensure the children are able to feed. They live in a mud wall with tinned roof and has a mattress to sleep on the floor. This is a family of three children, one boy and two girls.

At home, they eat kales and ugali, omena, beans and maize cooked together called nyoyo with occasional breakfast of black tea.

She helps with cooking, washing clothes and utensils, fetching firewood and water from the lake.

My School: In form one at Kajulu secondary school My Home: She comes from within Kisumu county a place called Osiri next to lake Victoria.  There is fishing going on here and many leave school for fishing business.  The auntie’s home is also next to the lake.

Immaculate Anyango Otieno

Immaculate lives with the mother who is a tailor.  She is the only child of her mother.  The mother died in 2003 while she was still very young. She has struggled in between to put food on the table as her job earns her very little. She wants to in future help her relatives, sister and community healthwise with the too much of strikes experienced in the health sector.  They have a mud wall with tinned roof house where she sleeps on a mattress on the floor.

At home, they eat main staple food which is  kales and ugali which is made from cornmeal mainly and occasionally small fish called omena as protein and sometimes cabbages and rice

She helps her mother with cooking, fetching firewood from the hills on weekends and in the evening after school and also in cleaning the dishes

Okeyo Millicent Auma

  Millicent is the 2nd youngest in her family of five boys and three girls.  She is living with both parents at korando village not very far from the centre. They have a house of mud wall with tinned roof and sleeps on mattress on the bed.  The parents are doing business but with little income to afford to put food on the table daily, let alone educating them. She is a hardworking girl and wants a lot for herself in life achievement.  She has a lot of friends and has been with mama since childhood while being assisted.

At home, they eat kales and ugali which is made from cornmeal mainly and occasionally small fish called omena as protein.

She helps with cooking, cleaning the house, wash clothes and dishes after school.

Jane Adero Okumu

Jane lives with both parents when she goes home and they do little business to afford to make ends meet. The father is a carpenter who gets very little job on roofing in the village due to alcoholism. She has three brothers and two sisters

They have a mud wall plastered with tinned roof at home and is sleeping on a mattress on bed.

At home, they eat kales and ugali which is made from cornmeal mainly and occasionally small fish called omena as protein.

Godfrey Ochieng Deya

  Godfrey lives with a step mother whom the father married after the death of his mother.  He was living with the grandmother together with his siblings since the father is addicted to alcohol and cannot even bring food home.  The family decided he finds a wife who is also just going through problems.  Godfrey has one brother and the other one died with two sisters.  The father is carpenter who does peoples roofs yet was not even able to do his and also frequently cannot even go on top of the roof to do any roof.

They live in a mud wall with tinned roof and sleep on a matt on the floor.

At home, they eat kales and ugali, and sometimes omena (small silver fish)

He helps take care of the animals after school, weekends he goes to the garden and do small errands.

Sophie Akinyi Oyoo

Sophie lives with the mother in the village where she goes to school after class eight and passing well.  She is a polite, intelligent and hardworking girl who tops the class in performance.  The mother having so many children having being married as a second wife after the first one died, found the man with many children apart from her own which is five in number.  They are two boys and three girls. She now has more than ten children which is a challenge in feeding and the husband does casual work as a mechanic which gives low income to keep the family.  They have a house of mud wall and tinned roof and sleeps on a mattress on a bed.

At home, they eat main staple food which is  kales and ugali which is made from cornmeal mainly and occasionally small fish called omena as protein and sometimes cabbages and rice.

She helps her mother with cooking, fetching firewood, washing dishes, clothes and their house.
